My quick find lists of sub Genres make it easy to find specific movies of a certain type.Phil Wallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05974752755699289141noreply@blogger.comBlogger32125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6489415782737397644.post-29971911086126767742015-04-07T19:47:00.000-07:002015-04-07T19:47:02.113-07:00Horror Is The Greatest Movie Genre...and here's why;

Horror films have been shockingly snubbed by the Oscar snobs over the years, with no true horror film ever winning the best picture prize. 'Silence of the Lambs' won in 1991, although it's more recognised as a thriller by most people. It definitely has horror elements, but even if I include this as a win for Horror that's one time in the history of motion pictures! The closest a true horror film has come to winning the most prestigious award in film is 'The Exorcist' with a nomination in 1973 and a nomination nod for 'Jaws' in 1975 (again, not a 'true horror').
Now, an Oscar win isn't the soul measure of how good a film is and this introduction isn't the best way to start defending my claim, but what I'm trying to say here is; Horror is often wrongly snubbed by critics and the Academy, and now I'm gonna explain why I think it's the greatest genre in film...

Exhibit A: The Directors

Horrors benefited from some of the best talent in the world making movies and it has launched the careers of many of the most acclaimed filmmakers in the business. Even some of the biggest names have dabbled in the genre. Roll call;

John Carpenter

I'm gonna get the ball rolling on my defence of the 'best genre of all time' with one of its greatest helmers. Carpenter made the slasher sub-genre famous with 'Halloween' (1978) and Michael Myers, one of the most iconic characters in cinema history. He influenced a generation of horror directors and composed his special effects masterpiece 'The Thing' in 1982. Horror has always been innovative in the advancement of special effects with films like 'The Thing' at the forefront.

Peter Jackson

Long before he was knee-deep in orc and elve shit with the hugely popular Lord of the Rings series and winning the best director Oscar for 'Return of the King' (2003), Peter Jackson was making his debut with low budget B-movie splatter fodder 'Bad Taste' in 1987, a gory and ridiculously fun comedy-horror. And then cementing his place in the trashy side of Horror history with the legendary zombie comedy 'Brain Dead/Dead Alive' in 1992. These films are a far cry from where he is now (all three of the LOTR films are currently in the top 20 on the IMDB top 250), but they were the films that helped to craft his film-making skills and they still have a massive cult following of fans, including myself. So, the Horror genre helped shape one of the most loved and respected trilogies ever made.

Steven Spielberg

Probably the most famous and one of the most praised directors living today, not really that well known as a horror director. Although, Spielberg launched his career by making people scared to go for a swim back in 1973 with his debut 'Jaws'. And his most successful film at the box office to date is 'Jurassic Park', the 15th highest grossing film of all time. We could argue these films aren't true horror flicks, but they have very strong elements of terror and fear that to me makes them horror at the core. One of the best known directors working today found his form scaring people with his debut.

Stanley Kubrick

Kubrick is often cited as the greatest director of all time, he made masterpieces spanning various different genres and it's difficult to pick a favourite from his work. While he's not known purely for doing Horror with 'The Shining' he created one of the most loved and memorable horror films of all time (currently ranked at 58 on the IMDB top 250) and got one of the best ever on-screen performances out of Jack Nicholson. Proof that the horror genre can be just as much an art form as any other.

Alfred Hitchcock

One of the most famous directors of all time, often referred to as 'The Master of Suspense', Hitchcock pioneered many of the techniques that have become the standard in suspense and psychological thrillers. 'Psycho' (1960) was one of the main influences on the popular slasher sub-genre and has one of the most iconic and memorable scenes in cinema history. When it comes to famous names in film they don't get much bigger.

David Cronenberg

The man that brought us the body-horror sub-genre, Cronberg's films are both thought provoking and disturbing experiences. His vast and accomplished back catalogue of horror makes up the majority of his early work and includes (but not limited to); the visually impressive practical effects laden 'The Fly' (1986) with an incredible and surprising performance from Jeff Goldblum. His feature debut 'They Came From Within/Shivers' (1975) a spin on the zombie/infected sub-genre where the infected hosts become sex crazed fiends. 'Rabid' in 1977 which plays like a companion piece to his debut, with a full-blown flesh-eating zombie epidemic, 'The Brood' (1979) here Cronberg's exploration of 'body-horror' as taken full shape in his most personal film to date. 'Scanners' (1981) mostly remembered for the great practical effect shot of an exploding head and 'Videodrome' (1983), where Cronenberg takes 'weird' to the next level. A consistent body of work during his horror era that any artist would be proud of.

Wes Craven

Craven has redefined the slasher genre and breathed new life into horror three times in his career, first with his controversial revenge film in 'Last House On The Left' (1972). As much of a precursor to the slasher sub-genre as 'Psycho' (1960) before it, his debut is one of the key movies in the birth of the American slasher movie, leading the way for the likes of 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' (1974) and 'Halloween' (1978). He then created one of modern Horrors most famous icons in 'A Nightmare On Elm Street' (1984), making audiences scared to go to sleep with the genius premise of a monster that can stalk our dreams. And most recently with the self aware 'Scream' (1996), dragging the slasher flick back onto our cinema screens when the sub-genre was pretty much dead and buried. And that's one of the great things about horror and its sub-genres, its ideas can be resurrected and made fresh again for a new generation with the right director.

Sam Raimi

Most known for his Evil Dead films, Raimi is a massive influence on young directors wanting to shoot a movie, more specifically a low budget horror. All you need is some friends, one good location and the passion to make something right? And of course all the equipment...but, budding directors see films like 'Evil Dead' (1981) and want to make their own films, I'm not saying it's easy to make, it's just attainable for someone with the right skill set. And definitely very inspiring for a young horror fan.

James Cameron

OK, he's not known for horror, but stay with me on this one. The director of the two highest grossing films of all time debuted with 'The Terminator' (1984), yeah it's an action/sci-fi flick. BUT, essentially it is actually a slasher movie if you think about it, and one with a strong sense of threat. An unstoppable killer trying to terminate a woman in the 80's with a synth driven score...c'mon! It's a goddamn old school slasher flick! And one Cameron fine-tuned his directing abilities on. Arguably still his best film too.

I remember going to the videoshop as a kid and nothing else in the shop compared to looking at that wall of horror tapes and picking out the most gruesome looking vids to scare your younger sibling with. In the 80's and early 90's horror was big business and the home-video market was booming. Later on I worked in a videoshop and even though the horror section had shrunk, you'd still get groups looking for a good horror flick and wanting recommendations. People rarely asked for recommendations on other genres, but horror; pretty much everyone asking for recommendations wants to know what the most scary or gory horror film is and then immediately rented it! I'd get free films, I would take one home after work to watch alone and have to check all the doors were locked afterwards, or I'd go to a friends house and watch with a bunch of people. And that's another great thing about horror; they're loads of fun with a group of friends or scaring yourself to death alone in the dark. Nowadays we just cycle endlessly through pages of films on streaming sites for something to watch, it's not quite the same.

More so than any other genre if you get a crappy horror film most of the time it still holds some sort of entertainment value. You can pick flaws with the plot and laugh at the dodgy acting, there might even be some nice gore effects on show (most Friday The 13th sequels and imitators have all these traits), a bad horror film can be an amazingly fun comedy. A bad comedy is simply just a bad film that's not funny. Even bad horror films are awesome most of the time!!

Along with science fiction, Horror has the most dedicated and loyal fan-base of any films, there's massive conventions for horror fans that rival the world of comics and videogames. And that's because the fans are geeks for what they love. There's so many sequels to popular horror films because there's an audience for them and producers know that it's easy money! More than anything we want new original ideas and classics of the future, we mostly get tired reboots and sequels and we stay loyal because we love the genre and when an awesome new independent breaks through it's a big deal to us.

Exhibit E: Halloween

With the exception of Christmas movies (which isn't really a genre), what other genre has its own special day? That one day every year that we go all out; calve pumpkins, set the room up with spooky ambiance and decorations, dress up as our favourite characters and munch on some treats whilst watching a movie marathon. And there's also a certain John Carpenter flick of the same name.

Surely it is the greatest story ever told? We seem obsessed with this concept, we've seen pretty much every possible incarnation of this idea put to screen since George A Romero invented it and we still want more. Is it because there's the fear that it could actually happen? Or that we usually find the true monsters of these films to be regular people? Whatever the reason; I'll take another zombie story over a rom-com any day of the week, or how about a zom-com?
He impressed with his 70/80's horror tribute 'House of the Devil' (2009) and showed variety with the enjoyable Innkeepers (2011) and his segment on V/H/S (2012). Definitely a name to keep an eye on.

The French director exploded on to the scene with the disturbing and instant classic Martyrs (2008), he also made a decent effort with the bigger budgeted and English language film Tall Man (2012). He's been a bit quiet recently, but hopefully we'll see something new.
Future Horror Verdict: 3.5 Severed heads out of 5. Brilliant debut, needs to bring something new to the table to stay in the game.
Rob zombie

Zombie's been around a while now and in some ways he's a veteran with his feature debut House of 1000 Corpses back in 2003. In terms of the future of Horror, Zombie is very relevant however and one of the genres brightest hopes. Looking forward to his crowd funded '31' coming out later this year.
With his low-budget debut and tribute to trashy B-movie exploitation; 'Hobo With A Shotgun' (2011) Eisener showed a lot of visual flare and the sort of gory violence ideal for Horror. He's gone on to impress with two of the best short segments on the horror compilations 'The ABC's Of Death' (2012) and 'V/H/S/2' (2013). I can see Eisener doing something really cool in the future.

Future Horror Verdict: 2 Severed heads out of 5. Not enough evidence yet, but he's got bags of style for sure. One to watch.

Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo

The French directing duo made their debut with 'Inside' (2007) one of the best Horror films in recent years, it was a tough act to follow and Livid (2011) didn't quite live up to expectations. They're attached to the 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' prequel 'Leatherface'.

Future Horror Verdict: 3 Severed heads out of 5. As a lot to prove on their next film.

Jennifer Kent

Jennifer's only film to date is her feature debut 'The Babadook' (2014), but what a debut it was! I'm hoping she stays with horror and doesn't move onto something different, with the hype surrounding her first film she might be lured away.

Future Horror Verdict: 4 Severed heads out of 5. Could be the next big thing in Horror, if they want to be.

Adam Wingard

'You're Next' (2011) was a great home invasion horror flick with some nice fresh ideas and twists, with a cool soundtrack to boot. His segments for the horror anthologies 'The ABC's of Death' and 'V/H/S' series have been a little uneven in comparison. He's attached to the remake of excellent Korean thriller 'I Saw The Devil', unfortunately the original is pretty much perfect and doesn't need remaking.

Future Horror Verdict: 2 Severed heads out of 5. Needs to prove they didn't get lucky on 'You're Next', remaking great foreign films isn't the best way to do it.

Kevin Smith

Here's a dark horse for you, the guy that brought you all those slacker comedies and dick jokes from your youth. Smith took a change of direction with the recent 'Red State' (2011) and even more so with his latest 'Tusk' (2014), he's got plans to do a trilogy of horror films with ridiculous concepts that will include 'Tusk'. He's also got 'Clerks 3' planned for fans of the good old dick joke days.

Future Horror Verdict: 2.5 Severed heads out of 5. Recent films have been entertaining, but roots are in comedy. Could be a dark horse, could go back to dick jokes.

The future of the greatest genre is uncertain, but there will always be an audience for Horror and new directors inspired by the classics!
Now I'm more selective with my choice of viewing, can't say I've seen that many great ones recently. Western horrors seem to throw buckets of fake blood everywhere for shock value and that doesn't do it for me. Ringu and The Grudge were scary as hell, but I've decided to go down memory lane and pick out the films that made me a 'Disturbed Kid.'

1. The Omen

I first watched The Omen when I was far too young. The music alone scared the shit out of me. It taunted me for years. All you had to do was hum it and I'd go nuts with terror. Even now it runs chills down my spine.

2. The Exorcist

Again, I watched this at a young age. I don't think I need to say why it's in my list. It's truly class film making and even the visual effects look good today.

3. Dawn Of The Dead (Original)

I love zombie films! And this is the definitive zombie film for me. It has a feel good vibe when all the characters are getting along in the mall and then everything goes to shit. And, it's not even the zombies, just the greed of humanity.

4. Ghostbusters

I know what you're thinking, but that opening scene in the library scared me to death as a kid. Still one of my favourite films, I mean it's just brilliant all round.

5. Terminator

JW: Probably more sci-fi/action than horror, but it was scary watching as a youngster. Some parts still have me on the edge of my seat now. Then Cameron ruined it all with T2.

DK: I'd say the original 'Terminator' is as much Horror as it is science-fiction. At its core it's a slasher movie and there's a real feeling of threat that's not really present in the sequel, which is more of an action flick.

6. The Gremlins

It's not just the best Christmas film of all time, but it also scared me as a little one. Superb film, I think a lot of people look back and think it's a family fun film, but let a child watch it and they'll shit their pants.

7. Lost Boys

I don't think I need to write anything. It's cult in every way, it's awesome in every way! Every time I watch it I just wanna be a teen again and kill some vampires!

8. From Dusk Till Dawn

It's an absolute thrill ride to watch. It blew my mind when I first watched it and it never gets old. It's cool as fuck! The cast is ace, I want a cock gun.

9. Blair Witch Project

This film freaked me out. Such a brilliant and original idea, so many have tried the 'found footage' style and I don't think any have succeeded as well. I first saw it in my early teens and it really messed with my head.

10. Scream

JW: I think this is Wes Craven's best, well everything else is a bit shit by him. I thought Scream was proper cool as a kid and teen. It's my favourite in the slasher genre and it has a good twist. It somehow took a genre that was over done, which already had many memorable cult characters and did something new.

DK: I think Craven's best work (and most underrated) is 'The People Under The Stairs'. A lot of his early work was quite groundbreaking in horror; 'Last House on the Left' and the original 'Nightmare on Elm Street' spring to mind. 'Scream' seems to have been tainted over the years by poor sequels and copycat movies, but the original was fresh and cool at the time.

Thanks to James for having a chat with us!Phil Wallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05974752755699289141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6489415782737397644.post-65613956216766811712012-02-26T01:29:00.006-08:002012-02-28T08:10:01.439-08:00Favourite Vampire Films by @leehardcastleLee Hardcastle 'makes claymations that are not for children', he's most know for 'T Is For Toilet' a short that will feature on the horror anthology 'The ABCs of Death' .
I have a passion for film, and Horror is one of the genres I love the most. I love being scared by a film; knowing I'm safe in the comfort of my seat, yet getting so engrossed in the story and the atmosphere I feel the rush of fear. So, here's my top 10 Horror Movies in reverse order;

10. Return of the Living Dead

Now, the ultimate zombie film is probably the original Dawn of the Dead. But I just find this movie a whole lot of fun, it's a zom-com tribute/parody of Night of the Living Dead and one of the first of its kind!

9. Ringu

The original Japanese Ring is one of the few films to genuinely terrorise me as an adult. The freaky atmosphere and sound add a lot to the creepiness. The TV...arrrgh!

8. An American Werewolf In London

One the best Comedy-Horrors ever made, with laugh out loud moments. I think the transformation FX still look good today. It's not afraid to get dark and brutal too.

7. Evil Dead

I think I'm one of the few people who prefers the original* (I like them all though) over the second movie. Raimi did so much with very little, it's dated but it's got some good jumpy scenes and creepy moments and all done with a bit of humour. Surprisingly, it was originally regarded as a Video Nasty!
(*EDIT: on a recent re-watch of the films I decided to join the herd and I also think Evil Dead 2 is the better film*)

6. Exorcist (uncut)

When I first saw this movie it seriously disturbed me, it still holds up well as one of the truly scary movies. It's got a genuinely nasty atmosphere, and great sound and visual effects. Needs to be seen fully uncut!

5. The Shining

Kubricks artistic visuals, that psychotic scene chewing performance by Nicholson, the slow burning tension, the music! I think because 'The Shining' is such a well known Horror movie it's become a cliche to like it. But, when you sit down and watch it, you realise why it's so popular!

4. From Dusk Till Dawn

One of the most fun movies ever made! As a fifteen year old obsessed with the Tarantino and Rodriguez boom of the 90's, I saw it on the local video store shelf and grabbed it without even reading about it. Starting out as a typically hip crime thriller/road-movie and then suddenly becoming this all out, balls to the wall action-horror flick! Great characters, special effects and buckets of splatter!

3. Suspiria

Dario Argento's masterpiece manages to mix a creepy atmosphere, psychological horror and gory violence brilliantly and all to one of the greatest film soundtracks ever! That music! I think visually it's one of the most stylish movies of all time and reminds me a little of Kubrick. I actually find the violence in this quite unsettling, even after years of being desensitized.

2. The Thing

John Carpenter’s atmospheric masterpiece is psychological enough to please intellectual fans of the genre and splashes sufficient gore around to satisfy the rest. The traditional special effects (although a little dated in places) are still amazing today and Carpenter's trademark music compliments the themes of isolation and paranoia.

1. Alien

I'd say this is as much a Horror film as it is a Sci-Fi. A slow-burning, skillful and atmospheric tension builder. Subtle acting from the entire cast and spectacular set design make the science-fiction believable. Eraserhead

What list of weird films would be complete without Mr Lynch? The king of weird films and master of surreal cinema. They say if you ask 100 people what Eraserhead is actually about you’ll get 100 different answers. For me, it’s a nightmare and the anxieties of everyday life contorting it. One of my all time favourite films, Eraserhead is a work of art that you experience. It gets under your skin, it’s like nothing else you’ll ever see. And the benchmark for all other 'strange' films. A unique Horror movie.

2. Visitor Q

You know with a Takashi Miike film it’s not going to be your every day ‘normal’ flick, and this is probably his most extreme film. Breaking pretty much every taboo, it crams in so much fetish imagery it’s too much for most. It’s about as completely batshit crazy as it gets.

3. Tetsuo

Industrial body-horror from genius Japanese director Shinya Tsukamoto about man fusing with machine. Hyper-kinetic assault on the senses! On a technical merit it's worth watching just for the stunning editing alone. Very unique, disturbing and weird.

4. Begotten

The plot synopsis pretty much says it all; ‘God disembowels himself with a straight razor. The spirit-like Mother Earth emerges, venturing into a bleak, barren landscape. Twitching and cowering, the Son Of Earth is set upon by faceless cannibals’. I found this a pretty hard watch, and it’s full of unsettling, grainy imagery.

5. Inland Empire

Probably Lynch’s 'hardest' film, think Mulholland Drive X 10! With Laura Dern on great form.

6. Gozu

Miike again, I could have probably listed 10 of his films and had a decent weird films list. Gozu reminded me of Miike doing a comedy version of a David Lynch film. In a good way.

7. Rare Exports

A very different 'horror' take on the Santa mythology. I thought this started to get really good just as it ended, still enough creepy horror to make my list.

4. Super

It's much more than just a Kick-Ass clone! It's not really that much like it, in tone anyway. A very weird, dark, brutal and quirky indie alternative. Future cult classic in the making.

3. 13 Assassins

Takashi Miike's samurai film is truly awesome, the 45 minute action finale is stunning and well orchestrated. Enough blood for gore hounds.

2. Drive

I absolutely love this movie! It really got under my skin (in a good way), it's the
coolest film of 2011; stylish, visceral and a unique soundtrack. Timeless and an instant cult classic!

1. I Saw The Devil

A massively original and inventive thriller; part serial killer movie and part revenge actioner. This is destined to be (badly) re-made by Hollywood. Genius!

Honourable Mentions: The Woman, Tucker and Dale Vs Evil, Stake Land, Troll Hunter and Don't Be Afraid of the Dark.

Most Gory: Hobo With A Shotgun
Most F'd Up: Human Centipede 2Phil Wallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05974752755699289141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6489415782737397644.post-29480569303964761302011-10-05T06:12:00.009-07:002012-03-05T07:06:05.196-08:00Don't Be Afraid Of The DarkIn a Nutshell: A young girl discovers creatures in her new home that start to terrorise her.

This is one of those films that’s ‘presented’ by Guillermo Del Toro, he also co-wrote the screenplay for this remake of a TV film from the 70’s. That basically means Del Toro produced it and the new director of the film is a no-name, so the Pan’s Labyrinth director gets top billing. Regardless, his name is attached so that is reason enough to take notice.

The story is rather formulaic and horror-lite, yet it manages to create quite a threatening atmosphere. Diehard fans of the genre won’t find anything too scary here, but there is a couple of jumpy bits in there and it’s not afraid to get a bit brutal in places. There’s a solid lead performance from young actress Bailee Madison, and Guy Pearce and (surprisingly) Katie Holmes are apt as her father and his new girlfriend.

Don’t expect the sort of orchestrated brilliance that makes Pan’s Labyrinth and Devil’s Backbone so great, by the end it’s a poor imitation of far better movies. It doesn't quite pull off that dark fairytale style that Guillermo Del Toro's does so well, although it does provide some fun, if forgettable entertainment all the same.

6.5/10Phil Wallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05974752755699289141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6489415782737397644.post-62007618728256198672011-09-30T17:33:00.003-07:002012-03-08T19:10:10.815-08:00The WomanIn a Nutshell: A successful lawyer captures and tries to 'civilize' a feral woman, the last remaining member of a violent clan. She couldn't stomach it and she had to stop watching; It's dark and disturbing stuff, and I'd only recommend it to hardcore horror fans. I'm surprised to see a film this weird, shocking, and utterly insane come out of America! It's a ballsy film.

Directed by Lucky McKee (May) and written by controversial writer Jack Ketchum (The Girl Next Door), 'The Woman' is at times a quirky black comedy, and it switches to truly sinster and depraved in the blink of an eye. It's an odd tone, and it sets a pretty unsettling atmosphere. Pollyanna McIntosh (Offspring) is 'The Woman', a part she plays incredibly and with so much screen presence! I actually believed she was this feral beast that could rip me apart.

The father of the family, Lawyer Chris Cleek played by Sean Bridgers reminded me of a twisted and EVIL 'Will Ferrell', and the rest of the dysfunctional family are all played very well. My only minor complaint is that I found some of the music a little grating and I thought some of the sadistic stuff lingered a bit too long, but this is subjective.

NOW, when the violence comes in fully it hits you like a sledgehammer and it goes straight for the jugular! I think there's some intelligence behind it all though and it seems to be carrying a strong message, delivered in a rather brutal and thought-provoking way! Compared to most horror coming out of America it's really original too. If you're a fan of subversive horror, and if you can go in with an open-mind and you aren't easily offended, WATCH IT!

8/10Phil Wallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05974752755699289141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6489415782737397644.post-33263460110520844372011-05-15T04:19:00.003-07:002012-03-12T04:40:30.914-07:0013 AssassinsI don't go to the cinema very often these days (in my job I get to see films for free on the Bluray/DVD release), but with some films I can't miss out on the opportunity of seeing them on the big screen!

I'm a big fan of Asian epics, martial arts and samurai films are one of my biggest passions! And I love shock director Takashi Miike, although with all the critical acclaim and buzz around '13 Assassins' it was hard to believe it was the controversial director at the helm. It seemed a bit too 'classy' for Miike, with no disrespect meant by that, I think he's proud of the 'trash-cinema' he's been behind over the years and I would be too...

I had to see it at the cinema, it wasn't every day you got to see a Japanese Samurai movie on the big screen in the UK! I went to see it with the missus during the first week and sadly it was almost empty, a bonus really, because we got the big screen all to ourselves!

It's a slow burner; after a harrowing and brutal intro, reminding you it was in fact a full-blown Miike film, the first half shapes the story and characters and builds the tension. Despite following several characters, I felt something for all of the main cast and it does a good job fleshing everything out. I did find it dragged a little at times, although that could have been because I wasn't in the comfort of my own home. It's good old-fashioned filmmaking at its finest, it takes its time to tell a good story and the pay-off is exceptional! The last half of the film is one big battle royale to the death!

The 45 minute battle sequence is one of the most spectacularly amazing pieces of cinema I have ever seen. The choreography spellbinds you with its brutality and rawness! Jaw-dropping stuff! And the cinematography deserves special mention. There's some truly masterful camera work at play here, Miike has several moments of pure genius!

I would have preferred a few more scuffles in the first half, but the last half of the film more than makes up for that!

8.5/10Phil Wallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05974752755699289141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6489415782737397644.post-4717889963506419342011-04-29T02:41:00.002-07:002012-03-05T06:42:05.193-08:00Insidious (Review)In a Nutshell: A family’s home appears to be haunted while their oldest child is in a coma.

A film by the creators of ‘Saw’; director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell, a duo that changed the face of modern horror with their indie debut. They took it down the gory for shock value path that spawned several sequels and films like the ‘Hostel’ franchise. The original 'Saw' was actually quite a fresh idea and not a bad movie in its day, a simple premise executed rather well. It’s now been tainted by countless shallow sequels, we’ve had a new Saw every year (7 to date) since the original (I become bored of the series after the third movie). Now with 'Insidious' they’ve come full circle and it seems they’re trying to bring the scares back into horror. FINALLY! Can mainstream Western horror get back on track?

Well, kinda...this is a frustrating film to review, so I’ll break it into two parts, because for me that’s what ‘Insidious’ felt like, two completely different films.

The first half is a creepy horror flick with some genuinely freaky little moments and ‘tingly bits’, a nice atmosphere is crafted and it’s a fun little ride while it lasts. Good-looking couple Patrick Wilson (Watchmen and Hard Candy), and Rose Bryne (Bridesmaids) play their roles aptly, the film builds the tension nicely and the score (one of the films strongest areas) orchestrates the visuals superbly. Then we move into the second half of the film…

The movie seems to take a sudden shift in tone, it quickly becomes like a shoddy version of ‘Poltergeist’; there’s a little comic relief (that’s ok), but then the scares start to get really silly. It no longer maintains that eerie atmosphere created in the first half of the movie, the final act is so poorly executed and tacky it completely loses steam. It’s infuriating! I enjoyed the start, did they just bottle out? By the end of the movie I really can’t see any true horror fans or film goer in general finding it anything but fluffy and cringe worthy. A shame because there was potential.

6/10Phil Wallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05974752755699289141noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6489415782737397644.post-62591933282192705222011-04-08T08:51:00.002-07:002012-03-05T09:25:34.029-08:00Silent House (Original)In a Nutshell: Laura and her Father spend the night in a house that they are helping to restore so it can be sold. It also infamously made hardened film critics squirm at press showings.

Silent House starts quite slowly, setting everything up and crafting a creepy atmosphere. It is low-budget, yet technically it’s quite accomplished; with long tracking shots and well-orchestrated scenes, although it is flawed it does well with its limitations. At times it does feel a little bit set-up, but even then it still manages to scare.

It’s a fine example of creating tension, it is one of the most intense Horror films I’ve seen in a long time and in my opinion the scariest film since Ringu. It’s only let down by an iffy conclusion, that will probably leave its audience divided. As we’ve come to expect with modern Horror in the West, this will (unnecessarily) get an American remake the year after its release.

7.5/10Phil Wallhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05974752755699289141noreply@blogger.com0
